GENERAL COUNSELING
A staff of professional counselors and social workers is available to provide help
with a wide range of concerns. Building healthy families, conflict resolution,
enhancing communication and coping skills, addressing parent-child issues,
decreasing stress, depression, grief, and anxiety are a few of the services offered.
Sessions are available in individual, couples, family or group formats on a sliding fee
scale.

ADDICTIVE DISORDERS PROGRAM:
The Center provides counseling for those dealing with the difficult issues
of Chemical Dependency such as alcoholism, marijuana and cocaine abuse, and
prescription drug dependency. Other compulsive behaviors such as shoplifting,
eating disorders and problematic gambling are also addressed.

INTERN TRAINING PROGRAM:
Masters or Ph.D. level intern candidates must compete for entry into our training program. They must meet our qualifications which include a two person interview and a presentation of a taped session. Candidates are required to audio tape sessions for review by the Director of Professional Services. Individual supervision is held at least once a week and staff team supervision is required once a week. We partner with La. Tech and LSU-S to help provide the highest quality candidates.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY DIVISION:

The Center works with area businesses to provide services for their Employee Assistance Programs. The program is designed to offer confidential assistance to employees, improving their health, enriching their personal and family relationships, and enhancing on-the-job productivity and satisfaction. Our counselors are also available for debriefing groups after traumatic incidents in the workplace.

FAMILY LIFE DIVISION:

In many families with parent/child issues, parenting class is an effective adjunct to therapy. Research shows that intergenerational cycles of dysfunctional child rearing methods can be fully broken by receiving parenting education. This program focuses on guidelines for healthy parenting of children from toddlers throug teens in traditional, single, blended, grandparent and foster parent families. Workshops are also offered for those parenting in a divorced situation. These classes focus on helping the child and all the adults involved.

Classes and Support Groups

PARENTING FOR POSITIVE RESULTS:
This eight session workshop is formulated to help parents understand their own behaviors, reactions, and attitudes as well as those of their children. We offer techniques to improve communication, to empower children, to use clear boundaries, with natural and logical consequences instead of punishment. A plethora of behavior modification techniques, including the magic of humor with children, are presented. Also covered are instruction in the utilization of family meetings, the development of mutual respect, and the formation of a strong parental support system.

ANGER MANAGEMENT:

This ten week workshop is formulated to guide individuals to identify their anger patterns and reaction styles, and to reframe those responses in a healthy, constructive, and appropriate manner. Covered in the workshop are modules that clarify family (or learned) patterns, defensive reactions, unhealthy coalitions, agressive acting out, and faulty belief systems. The course is presented in a humorous and experiential format.

RELAPSE PREVENTION:

In this open ended group, those who have recently achieved drug-free lifestyles are encouraged to begin to reform their social patterns, self image, and coping skills. Healthy living is not possible until an individual has set aside destructive behaviaors. As a wise woman once said, "You can't pick something up... until you first empty your hands." In much the same manner, an adult can neither learn nor practice healthy coping skills while he or she is in the midst of meeting personal needs through drugs and alcohol. The Center hosts this group to help address the alcoholic's past neglect and abuse of the family, and, more importantly, prevent further neglect from occuring.

Adjunct Services

LENDING LIBRARY:
Through the generous and continued funding from the Louisiana Children's Trust Fund, The Center for Families has been able to create a library for the use of any parent in our community. The library contains hundreds of books, videos, workbooks and handouts selected to aid parents in the most difficult and jouyous job that any of us will undertake in our lifetimes.

DRUG SCREENING ON PREMISES:
Parents may bring their children to The Center for drug screening when substance abuse is
suspected. The test may be a "one time only" occurrence or may be ongoing. If the results show that drugs are indeed in the system, then the parents are able to intervene and receive help for their child. If the results do not indicate drugs, then trust may be validated and the releationship strengthened. Drug screening is also provided for businesses who wish to test prospective employees as a pre-condition of employment.
